BMW E30 M3
When my client A1 Vehicle Storage said he had an E30 M3 coming in that needed shooting I knew straight away what I wanted to do with it. I’d had an idea for a while about using gels in combination with light leaks and flares to give a surreal, almost dreamlike but retro feel to a set. This felt like the right car to try it on so that’s how it started!

IN DEPTH:
How it was made
“The post-processing is where this image came to life.”
Shooting with red and blue gels to be reflective of the BMW ‘M’ branding, I shot the car first with normal lighting and then with gels on each side in order to get the colours I wanted on the bodywork. Although the car was in a storage area with other vehicles I used a CPL to avoid reflections and also bounced light off the surrounding white walls and floor to get the effect of the coloured light on the bodywork. The post-processing is where this image came to life, by carefully adding light where I wanted it but also by adding flares and light leaks in order to really make the image stand out and have the unique retro colour tone.
